Our
Mission
Dedicated to the conservation of Xinjiang
Promote the development of NGOs in
Xinjiang
Introduction
Xinjiang Conservation
Fund (XCF) was established in late 2001 with the initial funding
from Global Greengrants Fund (GGF). It is a
non-governmental organization and functions as a network of
local NGOs to coordinate NGOs' input into various national
and international processes and facilitates sustainable
development of environment in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous
Region of China. XCF aims at improving and guarding rights
of
the vulnerable
groups (the elder, women, children, ethnic groups) in
Xinjiang , raising public awareness of environmental
protection, implementing projects of conservation in order
to promote the establishment and development of a harmonious
civil society in Xinjiang.
Ø
Since 2001,
XFC successfully organized academic lectures and forums (Xinjiang
Environment Forum) in Beijing and Xinjiang for 12
times, so as to intercommunicate or exchange experiences
among environmental NGOs. It offers Chinese NGOs,
experts and the public a platform to voice their opinions.
The forums also enhance the public awareness of
environmental problems and attract more and more citizens
with the fascinating Xinjiang nature.
Ø
XCF releases newsletter
periodically, and some publications on endangered species or
situation of ecology in and around Xinjiang, such as 'the
ecology history in Talimu basin', 'Snow Leopard Artificial
Raising and Management Handbook', 'Xinjiang salamander',
'Wild Swan', 'The Trade in Sharks and Shark Products in
Beijing', 'Plant a Seed' and so on, which all contributed to
raising public awareness of conservation and wild animal
protection.
Ø
2004, XFC assisted
Beijing Huajia Economic and Social Development Research
Center to hold Workshop on Registration Issues of Grassroot
NGOs by organizing Xinjiang local NGOs to participate. The
workshop provided local NGOs valuble chances for interaction
and facilitated capacity building of them as well.
Ø
2004,XCF
indepentently implemented
the
Project of Investigation of
Poaching
and
Illegal
Trade of Snow Leopard in Xinjiang,
which was funed by WWF. XCF mastered the current situation
of illegal trade of snow leopard through investigation in
Urumqi, Kashgar, Kezilesu autonomous city, Akesu and Xinji
in Hebei province. The implementation of the project provided
clues and first-hand information to crack down
the
illegal trade. XCF also explored protection measures for
snow leopard
in the
Report
on
Poaching and
Illegal
Trade
of
Snow
Leopard
published
in Xinjiang. A network of dissemination of information on
snow leopard and its protection was established. More
researchers have been encouraged by this project to follow
up this issue.
Ø
2004-2006, XCF independently implemented the
Research on Habitat of Snow Leopard
in Xinjiang, which was funded by
the
International Snow Leopard Trust. Through analysis of
trackings of snow leopards, XCF mastered information on
habitats selection of snow leopard, areas
of ocupancy, rules of distribtuion and density, which are of
great significance to the protection of snow leopard and
estimation of the species number. A number of academic
articles were published
based on the results of this project.
The
Chinese
media made many reports on XCF’s project, such as CCTV
(China Central TV)
and Nanfang Zhoumo.
Ø
2005, XCF co-operated with EENOW to improve environmental
education in Xinjiang local universities. XCF funded for
instance green students groups in Xinjiang Normal
University, Medical University of Xinjiang and Yili Normal
College.
Ø
2006-2007,
XCF
independently
is implementing a project of
Investigation of
Poaching
and
Illegal
Trade of
Saker Falcon
in Xinjiang.
